Disney World Annual Passholder Discount
Those that have an annual pass often get a discount on rooms at Walt Disney World.  These tend to be limited and the amount is not a specific amount but varies according to the resort, room category and travel dates.

How Do Disney Discounts Work?
Disney World releases different discounts for different travel dates in limited quantities.  An advertisement that says, “FREE DINING” does NOT MEAN that every room in every resort for all of the travel dates in the offer actually will get a free dining plan.

Here is a harsh, un-Disney-like truth:
Disney DOES NOT offer discounts to make you happy or to make it possible for you to afford a vacation (but gee it sure would be nice if it worked that way).
Discounts are offered to sell excess inventory that Disney does not think they can sell at full price. PERIOD.  Sorry if I burst your bubble there but that is a very important thing to understand if you are trying to get a discount.  In other words, Disney is just not that into you.  (Funny movie reference there so if you haven’t seen the movie, just ignore that last sentence because it won’t make sense.)

This means that your exact travel dates, length of stay, resort and room category may not qualify for a discount even if it looks like it should from the advertisement.  Adjust your travel dates or resort by just a little bit and you might find a great discount available.

Think of it this way, you walk into a store and you see a sweater that you absolutely love. It is pink and $20.  On a nearby rack, there is the same sweater in yellow on clearance and it is only $10.  Why is that exactly?  Who knows?  Maybe pink is a popular color this year, maybe no one likes the yellow one, maybe people are afraid that the yellow one will stain when they drop ketchup on it (what, that happens to just me?) the reason doesn’t matter.  The truth is, you have only two choices….buy the pink one you love for $20 or buy the yellow one that you are not thrilled with for $10.  Well, alright, there is a third choice.  You could choose to throw a tantrum in the store until you get your way or the manager makes you leave but for the purpose of this explanation, I am going to assume that is not an option.

This poses a lot of challenges for those who are hoping for a discount.

Here is my best advice as someone who has enjoyed many Disney discounts but also has had to pay full price more than once.

  1. A discount will probably not be available if you are booking long in advance but may be released later.  Discounts are often not released until 3-5 months before travel and by that time, you have probably already planned your trip.  That is ok, see tip #4.
  2. You may not get a discount so don’t count on one.  Book the resort you can afford from the beginning.  If you do not get a discount, at least you can count on a trip you can afford.  Upgrade to a higher level resort or room category if a discount comes out that you qualify for.
  3. Be flexible and be prepared with alternate dates, lengths of stay, resorts and room categories that you would be willing to change to if a discount is not available for the original plans you booked.  For that matter, consider going at a slow time of year when discounts are more likely to be available in the first place.
  4. When Disney releases a discount, get that discount applied to your reservation as quickly as possible.  Remember how I said they were limited?  Wait a week, or even a few hours, and you may find that they are gone.
  5. Check, check and check again.  If Disney does not reach their magical occupancy rate, they may release more rooms and packages under the same discount.  This is not something that gets announced so check often.
  6. Consider using a travel agent.  They have the same access to discounts as you do but they work with the system every day.  Once a discount is released, they have probably been at their computer for hours already getting that discount for their customers before you have had your morning coffee.

All offers are subject to approval by Disney. Restrictions apply.  Rooms/packages are limited.
